It is hardly surprising that the actual use of the German language differs in type and form. This results from the fact that over 120 million people in 8 countries use German as their mother tongue. Like English, German is one of the pluricentric languages and has a total of three national language centers, which include Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The language situation in Switzerland is very different from that in Germany and Austria. The “Switzerdütsch” used in Switzerland, the Swiss colloquial language, is little or not understood by Austrians and Germans.
What is standard German?
In terms of linguistics, High German is a mixture of Central German and Upper German. It did not develop automatically, but is a kind of artificial product. It was developed by German philosophers, poets and scholars.
