Why should you learn German?
The German language is one of the most important languages in the European Union. Due to the economic success of the German-speaking countries, German is becoming increasingly relevant. With a sound knowledge of German, everyone increases their chances on the job market.
The language German is spoken by more than 120 million people in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, but also in Luxembourg, Belgium, Eastern France, Liechtenstein, Northern Italy, South Africa, Kazakhstan and Namibia.
German is one of the most important cultural languages. Some of the greatest poets, artists and scientists such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Friedrich Schiller, Ludwig van Beethoven, Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Sigmund Freud or Albert Einstein wrote their works in German. Approximately 10% of the global book market is written and published in German.

It is hardly surprising that the actual use of the German language differs in type and form. This results from the fact that over 120 million people in 8 countries use German as their mother tongue. Like English, German is one of the pluricentric languages and has a total of three national language centers, which include Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The language situation in Switzerland is very different from that in Germany and Austria. The “Switzerdütsch” used in Switzerland, the Swiss colloquial language, is little or not understood by Austrians and Germans.
What is standard German?
In terms of linguistics, High German is a mixture of Central German and Upper German. It did not develop automatically, but is a kind of artificial product. It was developed by German philosophers, poets and scholars.
